• Tour of the London underground railway mail
If the metro is so convenient to move around the city, why not carry underground cargo and mail?
Since 1927, for 76 years there was an underground railroad postal near London. Built Post Office of Great Britain, it was used to transport mail between post offices of the capital.
The idea of an alternative method of transportation of letters and parcels was born in the UK in the second half of the XIX century.
The construction was started in 1915. After tunneling started construction of stations. However, in 1917, the construction work has been suspended in connection with the UK involvement in the First World War. At this point, the system was completely ready stations and tunnels, which were used to shelter assets of some London museums.

In 1925, work resumed in tunnels, began laying paths and installation of all necessary equipment: elevators, conveyors and other mail, and the line was launched in 1927 in action.
The depth of the tunnels under the ground is 15-25 meters. For the most part line extends along a double track tunnel with a diameter of 2, 75 meters. At the bottom of the tunnel and the airbag stowed tridtsatisantimetrovy layer of concrete, on concrete - a route and a contact rail.
The underground mail train small. But there fun.
In the best of times, the line passed through 30,000 bags of mail (about 45,000 kilograms) every day, worked on the line and 30 trains.
movement of the train time was 26 minutes from the end to the end with all stops when passing all intermediate transit stations - 15 minutes. Creating mail subway helped to accelerate the exchange of mail within the city and unloading traffic.
The Underground Railroad operated from 1927 to 2003.
The reason for the closure of such an unusual railway was simple mail transport by road along the same route cost, according to various estimates, 3-5 times cheaper.
