What will be the Tverskaya Street after reconstruction
As you know, summer is coming soon, and then along the old Moscow tradition again begin to reconstruct the street. This year a lot of plans, but the main thing - it's Tverskaya Street. The project deals with our KB Arrow and Dutch architectural bureau West 8, which has implemented projects in different cities of the world: Copenhagen, London, New York, Hamburg, Shanghai and many more. The first phase affected reconstruction section from Okhotny to Pushkinskaya area. The second phase will be in a year. Let's see how to change the autumn Tver:
Tver has become one of the main streets of Moscow in the XVIII century. According to her from St. Petersburg, the Russian emperors went to the Kremlin, on her were the major folk festivals and processions, on it to build a better home in Moscow and shops. There has earned the first horse-drawn tram in the city, and then came the first Moscow tram. She also became the first street on which asphalt is laid and installed electric lights.
Tverskaya Street in 1903
In 1935, the Soviet government decided to reschedule a narrow and winding Tverskaya Street (at the time it was renamed Gorky Street) in direct and spacious. Then a plan was drawn up of the socialist reconstruction of Moscow, Tver in which were expanded by the demolition of buildings and moving. The capital of the new Soviet state needed the broad green avenues. Then, as you may know, demolished half of Moscow. The second half did not have time to take down, the war began.

As a result, the sides of the street was demolished all the church buildings (previously there were five churches), historical buildings. Some buildings that are considered valuable, just moved: among them the Moscow City Council and Savvinskaya yard. Due to free up space expanded out and built up a new home.

In 1947, as part of the same plan for the reconstruction of Tverskaya planted a large number of trees. So Tverskaya looked up to the 1990s.
In the 1990s, because of the reagents and the rapid increase in the number of vehicles, many trees died. Others simply cut down. At the same time the street back its historical name. It turned out that we have now.
PLAN FOR RECONSTRUCTION
What will be done with the Tver? Reconstruction plan Tverskaya Street refers to a portion from Moss to Pushkinskaya area. He is to optimize the car and pedestrian traffic due to the road to expand the sidewalks, to return to their trees and to replace the lights. That's how it looks on paper: it marked 105 new trees, 99 street lighting, pedestrian crossings and parking spaces. Click on the picture if you want to look at everything.
IMPROVEMENTS pedestrian zone
Landscaping of the pedestrian zone consists of three parts: landscaping, lighting and paving. Let's start with the long-awaited landscaping, is for designers priority.
Due to the tightly laid underground communications garden the whole street is not entirely succeed. 105 trees are planted at selected sites Tverskaya. Landing choosing resistant to frost and other extreme conditions the plants. The root system of each tree will be protected from reagents and contaminants kerbstones and fenced by communication type of protective structures.
Plant decided linden. They will be planted along the edge of the sidewalk in increments of 9-10 meters. This will help the trees grow well and saves them from having to compete for sunlight.
On the streets and squares will be located about 90 lanterns, recreated from drawings and photographs of the specialists from the museum "Moscow Lights". The new lamps are LED-lights that shine brighter but use less energy.
Now historical lights remained only on Pushkin Square.
In addition, about 50 new streetlights erected in Nikitinsky and newspaper alleyways, courtyards and squares. Here is the complete scheme of the future of lighting.
The last task in the improvement of the pedestrian zone on Tverskaya - this paving. Designers have picked up material and paving equipment in such a way that they match the monumental facades of buildings in the style of Stalin's empire. Pedestrian areas will be covered with granite. The edges of the sidewalks will lay dark granite stone: it will mark the buffer zone, which will be planted trees and installed traffic signs and lights. It visually separates the promenade of the sidewalk, lined with bright granite from the roadway.
Yes, the roadway will also be reconstructed. Primarily Engineering suggested narrow lanes to expand sidewalk. they are also going to organize a taxi stand in front of the main building of the street and reorganize the parking spaces in adjacent lanes of Tver. The plan will improve all the turns and races for the courts, organizing new public transport links and build on the alleys raised pedestrian crossings. In the future, on Tverskaya plan to allocate bandwidth for public transport.
That's Tverskaya looks like now:
So is after reconstruction. Please note, judging by the picture ugly granite sarcophagi, which immediately put a few years ago, do not plan to remove. It's very strange, they take up a lot of places, preventing the passage and they do not make any sense.

Arkady Gershman, a transport analyst:
The main problems in Tver now - is the noise, the lack of normal ground public transport and the broken bonds. The noise reaches to 85dBA, which is why on it not just can not talk. Ground transportation, which makes the streets more accessible to people and literally animates it, is now in full decline: routes a little, and they rarely go, and often just stand in a traffic jam. Broken bonds are expressed in the inability to safely cross the pedestrians and cyclists - for this you need to go up and down through the off-street crossings, that is a real man-made barrier for people (not just the underground and overground pedestrian crossings in the streets are not built already years throughout the normal world 30-40). In addition, due to the partial bessvetofornoe street, suffering motorists, who have to make big reruns.
To solve the first problem would calm traffic and reduce the number of rows, but, unfortunately, only a limited band narrowing that although good, but not enough to calm and humanization of Tver. Trees, of course, partly solve the problem for the residents, but it is a struggle with the consequences, and not the root cause. On the same level pedestrians still remain as it is now.
The problem with public transport could decide organization dedicated bandwidth and change intervals. But this was not done. Just for comparison, in St. Petersburg, Nevsky Prospect passes through 14 routes and have dedicated lane, in the same Moscow through Tver only 2 (or rather 4: 2 day and 2 night, but simultaneously only two). Solve the problem of broken bonds are also quite easy: in many places, you just need to draw the transition, even without changing the red light phase. This would have made the street a lot friendlier. With car reruns would be difficult, because it was necessary to change the scheme of traffic management and to install new traffic lights. But this would not only improve the streets bunch, but reassured the movement, as well as help to dispense traffic, causing traffic jams on the street would be less (rather than collective standing, the flow would be moving from a traffic light to traffic light).
Will Tverskaya comfortable after reconstruction? No, pedestrians and cyclists as they were unwelcome to her, will remain. The maximum that will change - the street will look beautiful from the car window, and the City Hall, the photographs and satellite.
What we have in the end?
In my opinion, the main problem of Tver that of the historically busy shopping street, it is in one point has become just noisy. Transit function prevails today, and many shops on Tverskaya do not put, the situation will not change. In Tver did not want to walk, here you do not want to spend time, even today people are trying to get by her side. Earlier, in Soviet times, when cars were few and along the street were trees, it was much nicer. Lanes, incidentally, was smaller (the sidewalk was parking and 6 was used instead of 8 bars for movement). Then the trees were cut down and the street widened. Today Tver completely dead. Even renting an apartment on Tverskaya should always cheaper than in other areas. The constant noise from the 8-lane highway, someone may like it? Compare the way, Tverskaya and Nevsky. For the same width of Neva much more pleasant to walk.
A few months ago I was at a meeting in West8 studio, which developed the project of reconstruction of Tverskaya. Then a lot of discussing how to make the street a good public space, so that it becomes not for cars, and for the people. Measures are also different discussion. For example, the visual would select several areas (Pushkinskaya, opposite the town hall, opposite the Kamergersky and at the end, where the Manezhnaya Square). It was suggested that there is more to do to restore the paving and ground crossings. We wanted to do a dedicated lane for public transport and even the narrow street to one lane. Ideas were many, but the main thing that it was necessary to decide - it will calm traffic. To car so we did not drive, that there is less noise and dust. Only then it makes sense to do anything at all. As a result of all the ideas could be realized only trees and narrowing of the bands. That's good, but not enough. In my opinion, the most important thing was to recover land crossings. I could do nothing at all, and simply return zebra. Street immediately would become much easier. But no one zebra back failed. Architects lost the officials who madly afraid of any radical, in their view, change.
If you look at the projects of various architectural studios in Tver, which appeared in the last few years, you will see a pattern that combines these projects - land crossings. But officials fear. "What if this ground passing someone shot down? No, better we of all people under the ground We'll drive! "- thinks the official. The question is, what is better - ground or underground passage, the city has long closed. On this subject, there are plenty of studies that question for 50 years as a solution to all the cities of the civilized world refused to off-street crossings in the center. But we have a way to go. Well even a tunnel under the Pushkin did not, and in fact wanted to before. For our officials from pedestrians on the streets at all some problems. They are falling icicles, they are hit by a car, they are scratching their feet on the slippery sidewalks, and still they are many resent. In the ideal city for the Moscow officials pedestrians should not be. But once they are, it is necessary to them somewhere to push out of sight and away from sin. So shove into the ground.
As a result of the positive aspects I can celebrate the return of full trees in the ground and historic lamps. I watched a bit of the inside and the processes can say that even this is a huge victory. Yes, the trees, too, could not be. to roll up the sidewalks in granite and everything. But they pressed through.
You have to understand, to some officials Tverskaya today - this election toy reconstruction they see only in the context of earning political points on it. And they do not care how and what will be there. Now you can not make a normal architectural competition, because there is no time. Because if you do a normal architectural competition, the Tver will not have time to pass the elections this fall, so the voter does not have time to enjoy the changes. The voter should be happy, an official from the mayor's office has to cut the ribbon in front of the TV cameras. It remains to hope that after the elections, the fuse will not work and will finish the first stage of Tver. Change the scheme of traffic management, add ground crossings. These are very simple steps that will make the city better.
How do you like the new Tver?
